Comparative proteomic analysis of cauliflower under high temperature and flooding stresses

Abstract: a b s t r a c tHigh-temperature and waterlogging are major abiotic stresses that affect the yield and quality of cauliflower. Cauliflower cultivars 'H41' and 'H69' are tolerant to high temperature and flooding, respectively; however, 'H71' is sensitive to both stresses. The objectives of this study were to identify the proteins that were differentially regulated and the physiological changes that occurred during different time periods in 'H41', 'H69', and 'H71' when responding to treatments of flooding, 40 • C… Show more

“…Importantly, Rubisco and Rubisco activase (RCA) are the primary limiting factors of net photosynthesis under stress (Ahsan et al, 2007 ; Hu et al, 2015 ). In this study, we found that proteins related to Rubisco (spots 6, 28, 49) and RCA (spots 16, 64) markedly decreased in response to high-temperature stress, similar to other proteomic studies (Han et al, 2009 ; Lin K. H. et al, 2015 ). High temperature can reduce the activation state of Rubisco (Law and Crafts-Brandner, 1999 ), which is often attributed to the thermolability and loss of activity of RCA under high-temperature stress (Salvucci and Crafts-Brandner, 2004 ; Sharkey, 2005 ).…”

“…Genechip assays have been used to compare expression patterns to differentiate between heat‐tolerant and heat‐susceptible cabbage lines, showing that heat‐tolerant lines show increased expression of heat shock proteins . Differential protein expression has also been noted in heat‐tolerant and heat‐sensitive cauliflower lines . Differential protein expression could also be responsible for variation in tolerance of other stresses, but is probably combined with morphological characteristics to determine the ultimate response of a particular line to each of the abiotic stresses.…”

Assaying protein expression could be used to screen genetically fixed lines, such as those investigated in this study, for stress tolerance and to provide more detailed analysis and to determine mature plant responses.…”
