Comparative Physical Modes of Action of Azoxystrobin, Mancozeb, and Metalaxyl Against Plasmopara viticola (Grapevine Downy Mildew)

Abstract: The physical modes of action of azoxystrobin, mancozeb, and metalaxyl were evaluated on grapevine seedlings using Plasmopara viticola as a model pathogen. The protectant, postinfection, postsymptom, translaminar, and vapor activities of azoxystrobin were evaluated at a rate of 250 μg/ml. Azoxystrobin provided 100% disease control when applied 1 to 5 days before inoculation. Postinfection applications of azoxystrobin had little effect on the incidence of disease, but colony area and sporulation from the resulta… Show more

“…Fungicide elicitor: azoxystrobin, belonging to the strobilurin class fungicides has a broad spectrum of activity against the major four classes of plant pathogenic fungi, namely, Ascomycotina, Basidiomycotina, Deuteromycotina and Mastigomycotina (Wong & Wilcox 2001). Inhibition of mitochondrial respiration of the pathogen is the main mechanism of action (Yamaguchi & Fujimura 2005).…”

“…Physical mode of action (PMoA) describes the effect a fungicide with respect to the time of placement of a fungicide in relation to the host-pathogen interaction, that is on pre-infection, post-infection, pre-and post-symptom, and vapor activity (Szkolnik 1981;Wong and Wilcox 2001) and the duration and degree of the fungicides activity (Pfender 2006). …”

“…Chlorothalonil is a contact fungicide used against a wide range of diseases (Tomlin, 2000). By contrast, azoxystrobin is a xylem-systemic fungicide with translaminar and weak vapor action (Wong & Wilcox, 2001;Bartlett et al, 2002). However Godwin et al (1999) showed that 8% of the active ingredient entering the leaf was transported.…”
