Comparative Pharmacokinetics of Theophylline in Camels (Camelus dromedarius) and Goats (Caprus hircus)

Abstract: A comparative randomized crossover study was conducted to determine the pharmacokinetics of theophylline in male and female camels (Camelus dromedarius) and goats (Caprus hircus). Theophylline is an established 'probe drug' to evaluate the drug metabolizing enzyme activity of animals. It was administered by the intravenous (i.v.) route and then intramuscularly (i.m.) at a dose of 2 mg/kg. The concentration of the drug in plasma was measured using a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique on sam… Show more

“…After a one-month washout period to ensure clearance of goat's bodies from any drug residues, goats were injected intramuscularly into thigh muscles with theophylline (2 mg/kg b.wt. once daily) [30] for seven consecutive days then tylosin was injected two hours after the last theophylline injection in the same previous protocol.…”

“…Thus, it is of great interest to develop methods for rapid and highly selective theophylline detection. Moreover, theophylline is an established "probe drug" to evaluate the drug metabolising enzyme activity of both man and animals (Elsheikh, et al, 2001) thus making it a key analyte in pharmaceutical studies.…”
