Comparative metabolomics study on therapeutic mechanism of electro-acupuncture and moxibustion on rats with chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG)

Abstract: Some studies have proved that both acupuncture and moxibustion are very effective for the treatment of CAG. However, little is known about therapeutic mechanism of electro-acupuncture and moxibustion on CAG as well as the difference between them. On the other hand, metabolomics is a ‘top-down’ approach to understand metabolic changes of organisms caused by disease or interventions in holistic context, which consists with the holistic thinking of electro-acupuncture and moxibustion treatment. In this study, the… Show more

“…After a habituation for 7 days, all rats were randomly divided into six groups (n=6 each group): control group, chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) group, electroacupuncture of the CAG rats on acupoints (EA group) as well as on nonacupoints (EN group), and moxibustion of the CAG rats on acupoints (MA group) and on nonacupoints (MN group). According to previous study [ 12 ], all rats except for controls were intragastrically administrated by mixture of 2% sodium salicylate and 30% alcohol and subjected to compulsive sporting as well as irregular fasting for 12 weeks.…”

“…Bao that moxibustion ameliorated visceral pain by downregulating the extracellular signal-regulated kinase, substance P, and neurokinin-1 protein and mRNA expression in dorsal root ganglia 3) . Also, moxibustion treated chronic atrophic gastritis by regulating energy metabolism in serum 4) and ameliorated the postherpetic neuralgia with herpes zoster through changing the protomics indexes 5) . In addition, moxibustion protected pulmonary fibrosis by downregulating TGF-β1 and upregulating IFN-γ cytokines at both mRNA and protein levels 6) and prevented depressive symptoms during pregnancy or postpartum 7) .…”

“…In addition, acupuncture is a comprehensive and holistic treatment. With the development of omics technology, the therapeutic effect of acupuncture has been studied in more diseases (e.g., diseases of digestive system), and some protein and metabolism markers have been found out to indicate the effect of acupuncture by using proteomics and metabolomics [38,39]. Moreover, many research centers in Europe and the United States have tried to integrate acupuncture with conventional cancer treatment [40,41].…”
