Comparative metabolomics of two saline-alkali tolerant plants Suaeda glauca and Puccinellia tenuiflora based on GC-MS platform

Abstract: Suaeda glauca and Puccinellia tenuiflora are two important saline-alkali tolerant plants that can improve the soil properties. For exploring the different tolerance mechanisms between them, GC-MS-based metabolomics was used to comprehensively evaluate the primary metabolites response, a total of 51 different metabolites were present in different quantities through PLS-DA score plot analysis. The identified compounds were mainly 11 sugars, 7 amino acids, 5 alcohols and 18 organic acids; they play an important r… Show more

“…In addition to the high nutritional value, halophytes are also promising sources of bioactive compounds [7,8]. Therefore, halophytic grasses represent an alternative to agriculture in face of the challenges imposed in the near future by global climate change [9], and scientists are starting to correlate their metabolite profile to the saline environment where they can develop [8,10].…”

“…are three halophytic grasses (Poaceae family) of which the polyphenolic and chlorophyll profiles are, as far as we know, completely unknown. Information on the phytochemistry of the Pucinellia genus is strikingly scarce; with one recent report on the chemical composition of Puccinellia tenuiflora [10] and nothing else about the other 110 species of the genus [11]. Similarly, few investigations were performed on the 235 known species of Spartina [11].…”

“…In arid and semi-arid regions, soil salinization is characterized by high concentration of soluble salts, such as NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 , soil alkalinization is characterized by high concentration of Na 2 CO 3 ( Alvarez-Acosta et al, 2019 ). Excessive Na + in salinized and alkalinized soil may cause ion toxicity to plants, thereby affecting the absorption of nutrients, mainly K + , by plants ( Ma et al, 2019 ), resulting in plant wilting and death ( Lu et al, 2021 ). There are also high concentrations of Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , , and ions in salinized soils that affect plant growth at the physiological and biochemical levels ( Ma et al, 2019 ).…”
