Comparative LCA of Two Thermal Energy Storage Systems for Shams1 Concentrated Solar Power Plant: Molten Salt vs. Concrete

Abstract: Abstract-Thermal energy storage (TES) for concentrated solar power (CSP) is gaining popularity because it has the potential to increase the hours of electricity production from the CSP technology. In this Study, we conducted a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) of two TES technologies (concrete and molten salt) for Shams-1 CSP plant in United Arab Emirates. Eco-Indicator 99 was employed to model the environmental impact per 800MWhe produced. Results obtained show that concrete TES has a greater environmen… Show more

“…Climate change is an essential factor, which should be included in further research to propose new improvements in the sustainability of future cooling systems, but also to reduce the cooling load in warm climates. An initial approach to the study of climatic characterization and future trends was carried out by (Abrahao et al 2017), who verified that maximum temperature presented steep annual increments (p < 0.001, 0.07 °C/year). Although Abrahao et al (2017) focused on the production of electricity from solar and wind resources, climatic characterization and trends are very helpful to establish dynamic energy demands (Silva et al 2019(Silva et al , 2018Medeiros et al 2018;Medeiros et al 2019).…”

“…Construction, operation and maintenance of the membrane bio-reactor were taken into account. It was noted that this almost eliminated the use of desalinated water [67].…”

“…However, these environmental impacts can be easily mitigated by exploring alternative methods for transporting and recycling materials. Thus, the environmental impact of molten salts energy storage systems is relatively low [119]. Furthermore, since molten salts are typically stored in large, insulated tanks, the land impact for these storage systems is also minimal [118].…”
