Comparative immunological and chromatographic study of some plant β‐Amylases

Abstract: A comparative study has been made of the β‐amylases of barley, wheat, rye, oats and sweet‐potato by means of exclusion chromatography and immunochemical analysis. The reactivity of barley malt and wheat β‐amylase was compared with different anti‐barley and anti‐wheat sera. In exclusion chromatography on Sephadex G100, barley β‐amylase yielded four, and both wheat and rye, two active components, whereas oat and sweet‐potato had only one active component. During the storage of barley, wheat and rye β‐amylases th… Show more

“…In earlier studies, Nummi (1967) demonstrated the existence of a polymorphism related to molecular size in the free barley /3-amylase. This heterogeneity in molecular size is found in several cereals (Nummi et al, 1970) and includes, for barley, some constituents which could be transformed into each other by reduction and partly by oxidation (Nummi, 1967). A further structural identification between these constituents and with the bound /3-amylase was provided by I.E.A.…”
