Comparative Histopathology and Immunohistochemistry of QX-like, Massachusetts and 793/B Serotypes of Infectious Bronchitis Virus Infection in Chickens

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare experimentally the pathogenicity and tissue distribution of the recently emerged QX-like strain of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) with the widespread M41 and 793/B serotypes of the virus. Histopathological and immunohistochemical methods were employed to define the main sites of virus replication. One-day-old specific pathogen free chickens were inoculated with five different QX-like strains, or with the M41 and 793/B IBV strains and monitored for 42 days post-infection.… Show more

“…The predominant histopathologic and necropsy findings observed in this study included hemorrhages and congestions in the trachea and congestion of the lungs, which are consistent with previous findings reported from the field (27) and from experimental infections (2). Kidneys were affected only in a few birds that were not vaccinated and were positive for Israeli variant-2.…”

“…Kidneys were affected only in a few birds that were not vaccinated and were positive for Israeli variant-2. QX-like AvCoV-IBVs as well as strains found in Israel and northern Iraq are known to induce or be associated with kidney disease (2,18,19); our results, from both clinical and sequence analysis, suggests that these types of IBVs are rarely present in Turkish poultry flocks.…”

“…A study recently carried out in Australia also showed that no macroscopic lesions could be observed in the oviduct of hens inoculated with the nephropathogenic strain N1/88 (Chousalkar et al, 2010). The absence of lesions might be due to inappropriate sampling time or to site of sampling (Benyeda et al, 2010). Otherwise, it might be due to the different tropism and pathogenicity for the oviduct shown by different QX-like strains.…”

“…In recent years some strains of IBV have caused proventriculitis (Yu et al, 2001;Gough et al, 2008;Benyeda et al, 2010;De Wit et al, 2011a;Sun et al, 2011) and enteritis (Jones, 2010a). Field infection with 793B has been associated with enteritis (Jones, 2010a).…”
