Comparative hematoxicity of fusirium mycotoxin in experimental sprague-dawley rats

Abstract: Mycotoxins are fungal toxin and contaminated to human through food-stuffs. Hematological abnormality, mainly thrombocytopenia and leukopenia are induced after consumption of mycotoxin. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the hematotoxicity of trichothecenes mycotoxins in Sprague-Dawley rats. Hematological parameters viz. Hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocyte count (RBC), white blood cell count (WBC), lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglo… Show more

“…According to the literature, ZEA exhibits cytopathic effects on isolated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Additionally, 30 lg/ml ZEA was found to totally inhibit T and B lymphocyte proliferation from the stimulation with phytohemagglutinin and pokeweed mitogen [31]. Importantly, we corroborated with the previous study of our group [9], which showed that lycopene treatment prevented the effect of ZEA on hematological parameters with possible involvement of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.…”

“…This may be due to eryptosis which can be triggered by several intracellular and extracellular signals [ 53 ]. On the one hand, ZEN-treated rats showed reduced haemoglobin and haematocrit after injection with the mycotoxin for 3–24 h [ 21 ] which was assumed to be due to cytopathic effects of ZEN [ 22 ]. On the other hand, another study provided evidence for calcium-triggered cell death of erythrocytes due to ZEN exposure [ 23 ].…”

“…For the present study, also blood parameters were investigated in carp since a previous study revealed that biochemical parameters in rainbow trout are influenced by ZEN exposure [ 20 ]. In addition, ZEN has been assumed to induce suicidal death of erythrocytes in higher vertebrates via different mechanisms [ 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Since also genotoxic effects of ZEN on cells of higher vertebrates have been described [ 15 , 16 , 17 ], the micronucleus assay (MN assay) has been used [ 24 ] to investigate possible chromosomal damage in carp as well.…”

“…In contrast, whole-body autoradiography revealed no difference in OTA and OTB distribution in rats [ 74 , 75 ]. Additional in vivo data was provided by Chattopadhyay and colleagues in a recent hematotoxicity study in Sprague-Dawley rats (250–320 g) [ 160 ]. All chosen hematological parameters were significantly changed after i.p.…”
