Comparative hard x-ray tomography for virtual histology of zebrafish larva, human tooth cementum, and porcine nerve

Abstract: Purpose: Synchrotron radiation-based tomography yields microanatomical features in human and animal tissues without physical slicing. Recent advances in instrumentation have made laboratory-based phase tomography feasible. We compared the performance of three cutting-edge laboratory systems benchmarked by synchrotron radiation-based tomography for three specimens. As an additional criterion, the user-friendliness of the three microtomography systems was considered.Approach: The three tomography systems-SkyScan… Show more

“…However, this did not offer additional advantages as images were of similar quality. It is tempting to speculate that recent laboratory-based tomography instruments providing phase-contrast capabilities, liquid metal X-ray source technology, and X-ray detector optics may provide a spatial and density resolution comparable to the present study [ 25 ]. This will provide opportunities for a broader applicability of the presented tomography-based approach, although at the expense of longer acquisition times.…”

“…The data were extracted from Endnote software in ‘.txt’ format and manually edited to arrange the studies by techniques. In total, 31 terms were considered based on these studies [ 11 , 31 , 39 , 56 , 57 , 77 , 78 , 89 , 90 , 121 , 169 , 170 , 171 , 172 , 173 , 175 , 193 , 195 , 247 , 266 , 286 , 294 , 299 , 303 , 304 , 305 , 306 , 307 , 308 , 309 , 310 , 311 , 312 , 313 , 314 , 315 , 316 , 317 , 318 , 319 , 320 , 321 , 322 , 323 , 324 , 325 , 326 , 327 , 328 , 329 , 330 , ...…”

“…The data were extracted from Endnote software (Clarivate) in ‘.txt’ format and manually edited to match the reading format and correlation of words; for example, British spelling was applied when translating non-English titles and acronyms were generally written in full length. The minimum number of occurrences of a term was set to four, and in total 140 terms were used based on these studies [ 11 , 31 , 39 , 56 , 57 , 77 , 78 , 89 , 90 , 121 , 169 , 170 , 171 , 172 , 173 , 175 , 193 , 195 , 247 , 266 , 286 , 294 , 299 , 303 , 304 , 305 , 306 , 307 , 308 , 309 , 310 , 311 , 312 , 313 , 314 , 315 , 316 , 317 , 318 , 319 , 320 , 321 , 322 , 323 , 324 , 325 , 326 , 327 ,…”

“…The successful imaging of the layered structures in the tooth cementum of the African buffalo could be regarded as a milestone towards the identification of previous hunting seasons. As the periodicity of the annual layers is close to 50 µm, the spatial resolution of currently available laboratory-based microtomography systems should be satisfactory to determine the month-at-death [31]. Besides the spatial resolution, the density resolution is critical [32].…”
