Comparative genomics of the transportome of Ten Treponema species

Abstract: Treponema is a diverse bacterial genus, the species of which can be pathogenic, symbiotic, or free living. These treponemes can cause various diseases in humans and other animals, such as periodontal disease, bovine digital dermatitis and animal skin lesions. However, the most important and well-studied disease of treponemes that affects humans is 'syphilis'. This disease is caused by Treponema pallidum subspecie pallidum with 11-12 million new cases around the globe on an annual basis. In this study we analyz… Show more

“…Members of the Cation Diffusion Facilitator (CDF) Family (TC# 2.A.4) seem to be present in all of the strains except Lpa. These secondary carriers primarily catalyze the efflux of heavy metals from cells and may also take them up into intracellular vesicles and organelles [ 56 ]. There are disparate patterns for proteins of the Resistance-Nodulation-Cell Division (RND) Superfamily (TC# 2.A.6) with Lac and Lpl (two PAP strains) lacking members, while the remaining strains encode only 1–2 proteins of the family.…”

“…Related to its reduced metabolic capabilities, T . pallidum has numerous genes involved in the transport and utilization of needed molecules from the host [ 1 , 14 , 15 ].…”

“…The genus contains both pathogenic as well as commensal bacteria [ 17 ]. Pathogenic bacteria include Treponema pallidum , and others such as T. denticola (Tde), T. putidum (Tpu) T. pedis (Tpe), T. brennaborense (Tbr), and T. paraluiscuniculi (Tpar) which are the causative agents of various disease in both humans and animals [ 18 ]. Porcine intestinal Spirochaetes form a diverse group of organisms including the beta-hemolytic Serpulina / Treponema hyodysenteriae which is the main etiological agent of swine dysentery [ 19 ].…”
