Comparative flight performance of three important pestAdelphocorisspecies of Bt cotton in China

Abstract: The massive adoption of Bt cotton throughout China has been accompanied by outbreaks of secondary pests such as Adelphocoris spp. (Heteroptera: Miridae). The Adelphocoris group primarily consists of three species: A. suturalis, A. fasciaticollis and A. lineolatus, which greatly differ in geographical distribution and seasonal dynamics. However, the underlying drivers of these differences remain to be understood. The study of flight behaviour of these three species can yield important insight into their spatial… Show more

“…Flight of laboratory-reared C. sinica was recorded with a 32-channel, computermonitored ßight mill system, adapted to monitor the ßight of small insects (Cheng et al 1997, Zhang et al 2008, Lu et al 2009). The ßight mill was composed of a 10-cm-long, 2-mm-diameter revolving copper thread arm, suspended between two miniature magnets ( Fig.…”

“…Other stored-product beetles also have been shown to initiate ßight more readily soon after adult emergence (e.g., R. dominica, Barrer et al 1993, Aslam et al 1994, Dowdy 1994and P. truncatus, Fadamiro et al 1996), but ßight initiation of these other beetles only occurred in very young insects (Ͻ1-wk old or Ͻ2-wkold, respectively) and was rare in older adults, unlike T. castaneum adults that were able to initiate ßight even when 5 mo old. The relationship between age and ßight initiation in T. castaneum is similar to that of many other insects that have the ability to ßy throughout their adult life, for example, the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) (Schumacher et al 1997), Adelphocoris suturalis, A. fasciaticollis Reuter, and the alfalfa plant bug, A. lineolatus (Goeze) (Heteroptera: Miridae) (Lu et at. 2009), and the ragweed beetle, Ophraella communa LeSage (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) (Tanaka and Yamanaka 2009).…”

“…Flight performance of adult Adelphocoris spp. was greatly affected by age but not by gender, mating status, or oviposition [31]. Mated females of Cydia pomonella exhibited peak flight performance between 1 and 3 d after eclosion, corresponding to the major egg-laying period [32].…”
