To understand the effect of hydrogen addition on the laminar burning velocity (LBV) of ethanol–air mixtures, experiments were conducted in a constant volume combustion chamber with the high-speed schlieren photography technique. The experiments were carried out under the equivalence ratios (ERs) of 0.7–1.4, an initial temperature of 400 K, an initial pressure of 0.1 MPa, and hydrogen fractions of 30% and 90% by volume, respectively. The effects of ER, initial temperature, initial pressure, and hydrogen fractions on the LBV were investigated. Moreover, adiabatic flame temperature (AFT), heat release rate (HRR), flow rate sensitivity analysis, and ROP (rate of production) analysis were also performed. Results showed that LBV increased with increasing hydrogen addition and temperature but decreased with increasing pressure. The hydrogen addition significantly increased the HRR of ethanol–hydrogen–air flames. The sensitivity analysis showed that R5 (O2 + H = O + OH) significantly influenced the LBV.

Ethanol is a widely used gasoline alternative because of its renewability. Laser-induced spark ignition (LISI) is a promising ignition technique for internal combustion engines because of its advanced lean-burning capability and flexibility in ignition location and energy. However, determining laminar burning velocities of ethanol−air mixtures with LISI is difficult because of its irregular three-lobe flame profile. In this paper, LISI and spark ignition (SI) were used to ignite premixed ethanol−air mixtures in a constant-volume combustion chamber at the initial temperature and pressure of 358 K and 0.1 MPa, respectively. The constant-volume method (CVM), which uses pressure history data as inputs rather than flame images as in the constant-pressure method (CPM), was applied for LISI to overcome the aforementioned issue. Additionally, two chemical kinetic mechanisms were used to obtain simulated laminar burning velocities. When SI is used, laminar burning velocities obtained from the CVM were 1.1−6.3% higher than those from the CPM. This was due to some assumptions made in the CVM. When applying LISI and CVM, the laminar burning velocities were obtained over a wide range of pressures (0.1−0.3 MPa) using extrapolation. As the pressure was extrapolated to two times of the initial pressure (0.2 MPa), the largest and the mean deviations between the laminar burning velocities obtained from the CVM and the simulation were approximately 10 and 5%, respectively. As the pressure was extrapolated to a higher pressure (0.3 MPa), a larger deviation was observed. Therefore, the laminar burning velocities obtained in this study between the initial pressures of 0.1 and 0.2 MPa are reliable.

The need for lowering the environmental impacts has incentivized the investigation of biomass and biofuels as possible alternative sources for energy supply. Among the others, oxygenated bio-derived molecules such as alcohols, esters, acids, aldehydes, and furans are attractive substances as chemical feedstock and for sustainable energy production. Indeed, the presence of oxygen atoms limits the production of aromatic compounds, improves combustion efficiency (thus heat production) and alleviates the formation of carbon soot. On the other hand, the variability of their composition has represented one of the major challenges for the complete characterization of combustion behaviour. This work gives an overview of the current understanding of the detailed chemical mechanisms, as well as experimental investigations characterizing the combustion process of these species, with an emphasis on the laminar burning velocity and the ignition delay time. From the review, the common intermediates for the most relevant functional groups and combustion of biofuels were identified. The gathered information can be intended for the sake of core mechanism generation.
