Comparative Evaluation of Specific Vaccines and Immuno‐Modulators in Disease Control of Beef Cattle

Abstract: Summary Two field trials were undertaken to evaluate specific vaccines and Biological Response Modifiers (B.R.M.) with regard to disease control of beef cattle. Clinical data and laboratory results strongly suggested a genetically determined resistance to transportation stress of some cattle breeds, with possible important consequences on the occurrence of multi‐factor diseases. Plenty of calves showed detectable levels of serum interferon and a remarkable activation of at least some lymphocyte populations in … Show more

“…There are antigenic and structural similarities among a IFN, ACTH and endorphins (BLALOCK and SMITH, 1980); both noradrenaline and ACTH can induce an anti-viral state, a I F N exerting corresponding hormonal activities on the same cells in culture (SMITH and BLALOCK, 1988). It might be of relevance that IFN, o r IFN-like molecules, possibly hormones, can be detected in blood samples of calves and pigs after acute transportation stress (ARTURSSON et al, 1989;BERNERI et al, 1991); these molecules could be induced as part of ongoing viral infections, or be involved in a general homeostatic response to environmental conditions. Most important, a IFN and a IFN-like proteins were shown to participate in different homeostatic processes: such responses are typified by the secretion of bovine TP-1, a fundamental anti-luteolytic signal of the conceptus (PLANTE et al, 1988).…”

“…Os autores detectaram que a lisozima só está presente nas lágrimas de cabras e ovelhas, e não de bezerros. Já Berneri et al (1991) usaram a técnica para comparação da evolução de vacinas específicas de imunomoduladores no controle de doenças de bezerros de corte. Riedel e Schmidit (1991), estudando a influência de leucócitos no colostro no sistema imune de bezerros neonatos, utilizaram a técnica de dosagem de lisozima e provaram a presença da enzima no colostro.…”
