Comparative evaluation of RAST and MAST‐CLA for six allergens for the diagnosis of inhalant allergic disease in 232 patients

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare a recent multiple allergosorbent chemiluminescent assay (MAST-CLA) with the RAST for the diagnosis of inhalant allergic disease in 232 patients with rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma. As judged by concordance of clinical history, skin prick tests to a range of six allergens common to our geographic area, and by nasal provocation tests, 70 patients were non-allergic and 162 allergic: 70 to grasses, 46 to mites, four to mugwort, eight to pellitory, and 34 were sensitive to sev… Show more

“…A significant association between the severity score of AD and the concentration of allergen-specific IgE to dust mites and cats was demonstrated by Schafer and collegues (21). Many studies have demonstrated that the MAST-CLA ® allergen test system provides an equal efficiency compared with skin test and radioallergosorbent test (RAST) in the evaluation of sensitized allergens in atopic patients (22)(23)(24). AD patients with concomitant perennial allergic rhinitis are more likely to have specific antibodies to mites, housedust, cockroaches, and feathers ( Table 2).…”

“…MBP and ECP are major cytotoxic proteins released from activated eosinophils in inflammation (20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26). Both of them may reflect the disease activity of atopic diseases through damage to cells.…”

“…In this study, the presence of allergy was defined using the MAST-CLA system, which is used to detect allergen-specific IgE antibodies using enzyme-linked anti-human IgE and a chemiluminescent assay, as reported previously [ 23 ]. This test avoids the use of radioactive reagents used in other in vitro tests and it permits the simultaneous quantitative measurement of specific IgE directed against 35 different allergens [ 24 ]. MAST-CLA sensitivity, specificity, and precision equal those of RAST and skin prick tests [ 25 ].…”

“…, are commonly used, and have evidenced good agreement rates of results with the skin prick test (Agata et al, 1993;Finnery et al, 1989;Orgino et al, 1993;Scolozzi et al, 1989;Scolozzi et al, 1992;Tang and Wu, 1989;Tang et al, 1994). MAST-CLA has the advantage that it can test for 35 common allergens simultaneously, and thus it is suitable as a screening test.…”
