Comparative evaluation of platelet augmentation activity of Carica papaya leaf juice and hydrocortisone in thrombocytopenic rats

Abstract: AimThe study aims at determining the possible effects of Carica papaya leaf juice and hydrocortisone in increasing the platelet count in thrombocytopenia similar to dengue fever. MethodologyThe study was carried out on 24 Long Evans Norwegian strain healthy rats to investigate the comparative platelet increasing effect of Carica papaya leaf juice and hydrocortisone in experimentally induced thrombocytopenic rats. Thrombocytopenia was induced by 3 doses of cyclophosphamide (100mg/kg body weight) given subcutane… Show more

“…We irst validated the thrombocytosis effect of CPL in vivo using chemotherapy induced rat model. This is consistent with others who demonstrated similar effect either using busulfan (Zunjar et al, 2016) or different bone marrow suppressant like cyclophosphamide (Patil et al, 2013;Akhter et al, 2015) and carboplatin (Tahir et al, 2014). Both aqueous and methanol extracts were signi icantly increased compared to controls with CPL aqueous with better ef icacy.…”

“…This study was performed to observe Carica papaya leaf juice effect on prevention of busulfan induced bone marrow aplasia in mice. Previous literature shows a range of factors that have been used for induction of bone marrow aplasia, among which are: benzene & chloramphenicol 14 , busulfan 10,15 and cyclophosphamide 16 . Busulfan was selected for this study as it causes irreversible damage to the bone marrow.…”

“…7 Many fruitful researches on role of papaya leaf extract/juice in boosting up the platelet count, white blood cell (WBC) count and erythrocyte (RBC) count have been carried out. 8,9,10 These all studies are performed on normal animals, dengue patients or reversible models of myelosuppression. The current study was planned to explore the effect of Carica papaya leaf juice on prevention of irreversible myelosuppression induced by busulfan.…”
