Comparative evaluation of passive damping topologies for parallel grid-connected converters with LCL filters

Abstract: In this paper a comprehensive analysis of three passive damping methods is done under parallel operation of multiple current controlled voltage source converters. One could argue that a well damped LCL filter with no peaking in the output impedance and stable designed controllers will turn into stable status under the parallel operation with other converters that share similar configuration. However, it is shown that this is not always the case, especially because of the coupling between converters and the gri… Show more

“…To derive the impedance model for the converter-side current control, and meanwhile keep the electric property at the PoC of VSC, the control loop is closed by only including the converter-side filter inductor L 1 as the plant [34], where the voltage across the filter capacitor V c is seen as the disturbance input. Then, the closed-loop response of the control loop can be expressed as…”

“…Alternatively, additional passive or active devices can be used as dampers for stabilizing the systems [10]- [14]. Passive dampers are, in general, robust, but they incur additional power losses [10], [11]. Lower-loss active dampers are therefore preferred, which however require the use of the high-bandwidth converters for suppressing those high-frequency resonances burdening the power systems [12]- [14].…”

“…The PD scheme by adding a resistor in series with the filter capacitor has been widely adopted for its simplicity and highly reliability. However, the additional resistor will result in power loss and decrease the attenuation of the LCL filter [9]. In order to overcome these drawbacks, the concept of virtual resistor was proposed, which is called AD method [10], [11].…”
