Comparative evaluation of oxidative enzyme activities during adventitious rooting in the cuttings of grapevine rootstocks

Abstract: A recalcitrant rooting variety cannot increase POX activity sufficiently before rooting. Therefore applications that could increase POX activity in stem cuttings during rooting may facilitate increased rooting in such rootstocks.

“…The induction, initiation, and expression are the major phases of adventitious rhizogenesis (Kose et al, 2011). The auxins are important in all stages, presenting a crucial role in stimulating the pericycle cells determination (Hartmann et al, 1990).…”

“…In agreement with results from eucalyptus (Eucalyptus urophylla) (Li and Huang, 2002) higher activity was found in the easy-to-root 'Cobrançosa' than in the difficult-to-root 'Galega vulgar'. In other species, like the case of Vitis vinifera, however, no relationship was found between PPO activity and rooting capacity (Kose et al, 2011;Yilmaz et al, 2003). The opposite was even observed in Rhododendron sp.…”

“…An increase in peroxidase and polyphenol-oxidase was reported by Abdelhamid et al (2013b) on faba beans and Dawood et al (2014a) on common beans grown under salinity stress. The augmentation in peroxidase (POX) activity which was used as a biomarker of stress might be due to increased release of POX localized in cell walls as reported in rice under stress situations, since it participates in phenol and lignin biosynthesis, causing a physical barrier against toxic pollutants (Kose et al 2011). Peroxidase enzymes are involved in a variety of physiological processes including ethylene biogenesis, cell development, membrane integrity, response to injury, and disease resistance (Abeles and Biles 1991).…”

“…The activities of antioxidant enzymes play a crucial role in scavenging ROS, and therefore their stimulation could elevate the ability of stress tolerance and delay the senescence (Alscher et al 2002). An increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes under salt stress could be indicative of an increased production of ROS and a buildup of a protective mechanism to reduce the oxidative damage triggered by salt stress (Kose et al 2011). Abdelhamid et al (2013a reported an significant increase in activities of SOD, CAT, and POX due to salinity or amino acid proline, or when combined together.…”
