Introduction: Hydatid disease is an important emerging neglected disease worldwide, with significant geographic variation in seroprevalance. The disease is commonly diagnosed on basis of clinical suspicion, imaging and serology. This study was conducted to evaluate our experience with serology in diagnosing hydatid disease in terms of identifying the numbers of patients testing positive for antibodies against Echinococcus, and to study their clinical profile. This study included all patients who tested for anti-Echinococcus IgG antibodies by ELISA in the years 2011-2013. The clinical characteristics of seropositive patients were contrasted with seronegative patients, and the test results were correlated with radiological findings and, where performed, with histopathological studies. Analysis was performed on SPSS. Out of 31 patients evaluated by serology for Echinococcosis during the study period, 7 (22.58%) were seropositive. Liver was the most frequent site involved (24 patients; 77.77%). Second organ the lung 5(16.13%) bone 1(3.23%) and the optic 1(3.22%).Of the 29 patients who also underwent biopsy, all the seven patients with positive biopsy were seropositive, suggesting 100% sensitivity. The specificity was 83.33%, but this might be a lower estimate due to potentially high rate of false-negative biopsies, as all the seropositive patients also had imaging features suggestive of disease. The positive and negative predictive values were 77.77% and 90.90%, respectively. ELISA for detection of anti Echinococcus antibodies is a simple serological test that helps in correlation with imaging finding in the diagnosis and subsequent management of hydatid disease. Most serodiagnostic techniques have been evaluated for diagnosis of cystic hydatid disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Each, to varying degrees, has been shown to give false results, with considerable variation between laboratories. The comparative study was made concerning the sensitivity of the immunodiagnostic methods based on 58 sera from hydatid disease with different cyst locations. Latex agglutination, immunoelectrophoresis (IEP), and specific IgE, IgG enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests were studied. Specific IgG ELISA AgB (antigen B‐rich fraction) was the most sensitive test (96.5%) and the least sensitive tests were specific IgE ELISA (24.1%) and IEP (25.8%). The low sensitivity of these two tests was due partly to the low reactivity detected in the sera of patients with lung hydatidosis. Initial laboratory studies showed purified antigens to be preferable to crude cyst fluid, regardless of the type of test used. For this reason, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of ELISA by using the purified antigen‐B‐rich fraction. In all, 117 sera were examined: 78 sera from patients with hydatidosis surgically confirmed, 15 sera from healthy control subjects, and 24 sera from patients with diseases other than hydatidosis. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of sonographically guided percutaneous drainage and irrigation of hepatic hydatid cysts.Methods. Sixty-one patients with 84 hepatic hydatid cysts were treated using the puncture, aspiration, injection, and reaspiration (PAIR) technique under sonographic guidance. Patients with cysts larger than 6 cm in diameter underwent PAIR followed by percutaneous drainage (PAIR-PD). The cysts were sterilized by the injection of 1 of 2 scolicidal agents, 20% hypertonic saline solution (38 patients) or 0.5% silver nitrate (23 patients). All patients underwent follow-up examinations for 1 month-6 years after aspiration. Clinical and radiologic examinations and laboratory analyses were performed every month for the first 6 months and then at 3-month intervals.
