Comparative Evaluation of Effect of Endodontic Procedures on Peripheral Oxygen Saturation Levels and Pulse Rate Based on Age and Gender

Abstract

Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive, indirect, continuous and cheap method of monitoring and evaluating the peripheral oxygen saturation in a clinical setting. Operative dental procedures involving the patient often involve fear and anxiety which may lower the oxygen saturation in the blood resulting in hypoxia. This current study aimed to evaluate the effects of invasive and non-invasive treatment modalities on the peripheral oxygen saturation using a reproducible and standardized method. This cross-sectional study was conducted in the department of Conservative dentistry and Endodontics. The study participants consisted of a total number of 100 patients aged 18-60-years who visited clinics for routine Endodontic procedures. The treatment was carried out by various endodontists in the clinic while pulse rate, SpO2 values of these patients were noted by the single operator. The oxygen saturation and pulse rate was assessed using the Pulse oximeter. A total of 100 patients were seen, 20 for each of the procedures. Mean age for the children was 25.5 ± 0.9 years for restorative procedures ; 41.7 ± 0.4 years for single visit RCT ;45.3 ± 0.9 years for multi visit RCT ; 37.0 ± 0.5 years for post endodontic procedures and 42.4 ± 0.6 years for full veneer crown procedures. Many individuals may experience stress and systemic disruptions as a result of the use of local anaesthetics and the execution of significant dental treatments. Monitoring can therefore help the dentist determine whether any emergency treatments or preventive measures were effective.
