Comparative egg morphology of six Meccus species and Triatoma recurva (Stål, 1868) Hemiptera: Reduviidae

Abstract: We investigated the morphology and morphometry of eggs from the colonies of the Entomology Laboratory at ENCB-IPN belonging to six species of the genus Meccus and Triatoma recurva, using both light and scanning electron microscopy. Egg ornamentation is an important parameter to consider in the differentiation of species. Samples were observed under a scanning electron microscope. Measurements of fifty eggs per species included length, width, and opercular diameter, which were used for the morphometric analysis… Show more

“…Morphological and morphometric analyses conducted with other structures, such as the scutellum, genital plates in nymphs, and egg ornamentation, have shown no polymorphism in several Meccus species. At the same time, these studies have provided discriminant characters to differentiate among species (Rodríguez‐Sánchez et al , Takashi et al , Rivas et al , ).…”

“…Currently, taxonomic studies of these vectors have been based on morphological, morphometric, genetic, cytogenetic, molecular analyses, and experimental crossings 5 . Morphological and morphometric studies applied to taxonomy cover various structures of triatomines, such as the head, wing, thorax and genitalia, as well as their eggs 10 – 20 …”
