Comparative efficacy of nanofilled and microfilled resin-modified glass ionomer as pits and fissure sealant in permanent molar teeth

Abstract: <p>The purpose of the present study was to compare the efficacy of nanofilled and microfilled resin- modified glass ionomer as pits and fissure sealants in permanent molar teeth. Ninety six teeth having fissure at the occlusal surface were randomly divided into two groups: Group I: Treated by nanofilled resin-modified glass ionomer sealant and Group II: Treated by microfilled resin- modified glass ionomer sealants. Clinical assessment was performed by modified Ryge´s criteria by means of retention, color… Show more

“…Based on the method of polymerization resin-based sealants are classified as auto-polymerized and light polymerized [ 10 ]. The auto-polymerized sealants, also known as self-cure, are two-component systems [ 11 ]. These auto-polymerized sealants have more or less been replaced by light-polymerized sealants [ 11 ].…”

“…2 Recently, nanotechnology has been introduced in the dentistry which contains small particles of 0.1-100 nanometers ranges. 4 These small particles are favorable to obtain good wear resistance, easy polishable and better esthetics. 5 Firstly, developed nanofillers composite resin obtains high fracture toughness, better lasting polish, retention and aesthetics, and higher wear resistance.…”

“…15 Furthermore, abrasion resistance and fluoride release have been increased. 16 In addition, they have minimum voids, cracks and microporosities on the surfaces of nanofilled resin-modified glass ionomer than the conventional ionomers. 17 Therefore, nanofilled resin-modified glass ionomer (Ketac Nano 100 TM ) is considered as a reliable alternative to other conventional glass ionomer (Fuji IX) as a pit and fissure sealant.…”
