Comparative effects of gibberellins and an N-substituted phthalimide on seed germination and extension growth of celery (Apium graveolens L.)

Abstract: The N-substituted phthalimide AC 94377 (1-(3-chlorophthalimido)-cyclohexanecarboxamide) was equally effective as a mixture of the gibberellins A, and A7 (GA,,,) in breaking dormancy and stimulating germination of celery seeds when either was used in combination with ethephon or daminozide as a seed soak . Whereas seedlings emerging from GA,,,-treated seeds became etiolated in comparison with those from untreated seeds, those from AC 94377-treated seeds showed normal development . Preharvest sprays of gibberell… Show more

“…Modifications to this should be relatively easy to implement . Secondly use of the N-substituted phthalimide (1-(3-chlorophthalimido)-cyclo hexane carboxamide) may avoid the detrimental side effects of gibberellins [10] . Paradoxically, although it may now be possible to introduce such treatments, their benefit may have decreased as seed vigour has increased [13,3] .…”

“…AC 94,377 promotes growth, Tlowering, and alterations in plant sex expression [10,12,[16][17][18][19], and it is also active in a number oT gibberellin-bioassay systems [10,18] . In addition, germination and emergence oT dormant weed [2,11] and celery seed [4] are enhanced by AC 94,377, suggesting potential utility in agricultural applications . “…S11). Our study suggests that the biological activities of AC94377 differ from that of GA in many plants (Gott and Thomas, 1986), which may be attributable to the GID1 subtype selectivity of AC94377.…”
