Comparative effects of final canal irrigation with chitosan and EDTA

Abstract: Comparative effects of final canal irrigation with chitosan and EDTA Chitosan is a natural, biocompatible chelating substance with potential for dental use. This study compared the effects of final canal irrigation with chitosan and EDTA on dentin microhardness, sealer dentin tubules penetration capacity, and push-out strength. Methodology: Fifty canine roots were distributed according to the final irrigation protocol (n=10): G1-15% EDTA with conventional irrigation; G2-15% EDTA with Endovac; G3-0.2% chitosan … Show more

“…The cleanliness of the root canal wall from the smear layer increases bond strength to dentin and reduces microleakage for sealers by enhancing the sealer penetration into the dentinal tubules resulting in mechanical interlocking to the canal walls [ 8 ]. Several previous studies were in accordance with this study which stated that 0.2% chitosan produced the same bond strength as 17% EDTA [ 34 , 35 ] and greater sealer penetration with a variety of application times [ 36 , 37 ].The advantage of chitosan compared to EDTA as the final irrigation material is chitosan has antibacterial properties, while EDTA has no antibacterial properties [ 16 ], although antibacterial properties of chitosan were not tested in this study.…”

“…With regarding to ability of smear layer removal at different level of the root canal, current results of both tested solutions showed maximum smear layer removal at both coronal and middle thirds and the least cleaning efficacy was at apical third and the difference was statistically significant. This result agrees with different studies which evaluated effect of EDTA on smear layer removal (42)(43)(44)(45)(46) . This result may be due to stagnation plane of the residual fluid of irrigant at apical third that attributed to irrigation technique (42) .…”

“…According to Mjör et al. (29), the cervical third has a larger number and diameter of dentinal tubules compared with the other thirds, which could favour tagging and mechanical retention of filling material (9,30).…”
