Comparative effectiveness of oral pharmacologic interventions for knee osteoarthritis: A network meta-analysis

Abstract: In the overall analysis, etoricoxib, celecoxib, and aceclofenac had the highest rankings for improving WOMAC pain. The ability to improve knee OA symptoms may differ depending on baseline pain and radiologic features.

“…In our sample, the most common drug pairs involving NSAID TDs were aceclofenac plus meloxicam, celecoxib plus aceclofenac, and celecoxib plus meloxicam (Table 2). One possible explanation of TD is that physicians may have expected additional beneficial effects from combining selective cyclooxygenase 2 (COX‐2) inhibitors with other NSAIDs, since in a recent network meta‐analysis aceclofenac had been reported to be effective in the higher pain intensity group (19). However, because the use of 2 concurrent NSAIDs may increase the risk of adverse events, this duplication is one of the most common criteria for potentially inappropriate prescribing, as in the Prescribing Optimally in Middle‐aged People’s Treatments criteria (20) and in the Screening Tool of Older Persons’ Potentially Inappropriate Prescriptions (STOPP) criteria (21).…”
