Comparative Effect of Treadmill Exercise on Mature BDNF Production in Control versus Stroke Rats

Abstract: Physical exercise constitutes an innovative strategy to treat deficits associated with stroke through the promotion of BDNF-dependent neuroplasticity. However, there is no consensus on the optimal intensity/duration of exercise. In addition, whether previous stroke changes the effect of exercise on the brain is not known. Therefore, the present study compared the effects of a clinically-relevant form of exercise on cerebral BDNF levels and localization in control versus stroke rats. For this purpose, treadmill… Show more

“…Poststroke exercise and EE also increase expression of growth-associated proteins such as growth-associated protein 43 [49], microtubule-associated protein 2 [44], and netrin (along with the associated deleted in colorectal cancer receptor) [50], as well as markers of synaptogenesis [46,51,52]. Such proteins are involved in axonal sprouting, dendritic complexity, and spine growth [4], phenomena occurring in the peri-and contralesional cortex of functionally recovered animals [14,53].…”

“…We previously showed that such a modality of physical training (treadmill activity with a horizontal position, 30 minutes/day, 18 m/minute, for 7 consecutive days) induced a mild increase in citrate synthase activity in skeleton muscles, did not change blood pressure in WKY rats and SHR, 13 and resulted in a twofold increase in mature BDNF levels in the cortex when induced in control Wistar rats. 14 …”

“…However, this therapy can only be administered to a small percentage of patients, and there is no effective treatment for improvement of functional recovery in the post-ischemic phase [7], [8]. Functional recovery after stroke can potentially be induced by stimulation of endogenous neurogenesis [9].…”
