“…They are an excellent pollinator of various economic crops and forest plants, and they have a wide foraging range (Wongsiri et al, 2000;Tahmasebi et al, 2002). The species is now well established in Sudan, where it was first detected in 1985 (Mogga and Ruttner, 1988), as well as in Iraq, Oman, and Yemen (Wongsiri et al, 1996). This bee has recently also been detected in Jordan (Haddad et al, 2008(Haddad et al, , 2009) and central Saudi Arabia (Hepburn et al, 2005), and has become widely distributed in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia.…”

“…In some ways, oligolectic, migratory species such as the Asian honey bees will be better able to adapt to environmental change and changes in ecotones than most other insects. However there is anecdotal evidence that some species (notably A. andreniformis (Wongsiri et al, 1997) and A. koschevnikovi (Otis, 1996)) are obligate forest dwellers whose range will become more restricted with the retreat of the rainforest. On the other hand both these species inhabit disturbed areas including cities and towns in Borneo (personal observations of BPO) and so the exact cause of the decline of A. koschevnikovi in Malaysia and the rarity of A. andreniformis in most of Thailand is unclear.…”

“…The red dwarf honey bee, Apis florea, of south east Asia and India builds a single comb suspended from a twig or small branch, within which it stores honey and pollen and raises brood (Wongsiri et al, 1997;Oldroyd and Wongsiri, 2006). The species is highly migratory, with colonies moving into areas where floral resources are abundant, and leaving when resources decline (Pandey, 1974;Sheikh and Chetry, 2000;Oldroyd and Wongsiri, 2006).…”
