Hyptis suaveolens, (family: Lamiaceae) commonly known as bushmint is considered as a weed plant of plains. Plant grows widely in open land segments, road sides and covers almost all available areas in certain parts of the plains. The plant is highly aromatic and reported to have Eucaliptol (47.64 %) as the major constituent; the other main components of the oil were α-caryophyllene (26.0%); α-elemene (10.4%); trans-α-bergamotene (7.7%); spathulenol (7.0%); bicyclogermacrene (6.5%) etc. Traditionally, the plant is known for the treatment of diabetes mellitus, fever, eczema, flatulence, cancers and headache, infective diseases and management of chronic wounds, affections of the uterus, parasitic cutaneous diseases, for headache and as snuff to stop bleeding of the nose; colic and stomachaches (leaf juice). In experimental set up the plant exhibited antimicrobial, antinflammatory, antifungal and antioxidative properties. It’s treated as a weed which being non palatable to animals and not utilized for any potential use. But Hyptis suaveolens does possess a variety of beneficial biological activities, thus, needs a systematic evaluation for human acceptability and use.

Essential oils from Hyptis suaveolens (L.) Poiteau (Lamiaceae) and Hyptis spicigera Lamarck (Lamiaceae) were first analysed by gas chromatography and by gas chromatography/electron impact mass spectroscopy and then evaluated for toxicity and repellent activity against Sitophilus granarius (L.) (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae), one of the most serious worldwide stored grain pests. Fifty-six compounds have been identified in the essential oil of H. suaveolens: monoterpene hydrocarbons were the most represented volatiles (64. 1%), followed by sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (24. 0%), oxygenated monoterpenes (8. 1%) and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (2. 4%). Diterpenes and non-terpene derivatives were scarcely represented. Sixty compounds have been identified in the essential oil of H. spicigera: monoterpene hydrocarbons were the most represented class of volatiles (70. 4%), followed by sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (22. 6%). Results from topical applications on insects showed that both essential oils had an effective insecticidal activity. The complete kill of S. granarius was observed 24 h after treatment at a minimum effective dose of 0. 4 and 0. 6 μl per insect with H. suaveolens and H. spicigera oil, respectively. Results from repellency tests showed that the two essential oils had a repellent activity on S. granarius adults: at the lowest dose (2 × 10 -4 μl oil per cm 2), H. spicigera essential oil exhibited a higher repellent effect in comparison to H. suaveolens. No significant differences were observed for the repellent effect between the two essential oils at the highest dose (2 × 10 -2 μl oil per cm 2)

Comparative efficacy of NeemAzal and local botanicals derived from Azadirachta indica and Plectranthus glandulosus against Sitophilus zeamais on maize

The efficacy of NeemAzal powder, two local neem (Azadirachta indica) products [neem seed powder (NSP) and neem seed oil (NSO)], as well as a local Lamiaceae, Plectranthus glandulosus leaf powder, applied at four different rates for the control of Sitophilus zeamais was determined. Mortality was recorded 1, 3, 7 and 14 days after S. zeamais infestation, followed by the determination of F 1 progeny production. Grain damage, population increase and grain germination were assessed for treated grains that were stored for 4 months. Grains treated with P. glandulosus powder and NSP had relatively low mortality (5.0-22.5%) after 3 days whereas NeemAzal and NSO had higher mortality (55.0-98.8%). Maximum mortality of 99, 100, 96 and 74% were achieved for NeemAzal (12 g/kg after 14 days), NSO (4 ml/kg after 7 days), NSP (40 g/kg after 14 days) and P. glandulosus powder (40 g/kg, after 14 days), respectively. In the same order, 7-day LC 50 values were 0.02 g/kg, 1.46 ml/kg, 12.44 g/kg and 28.9 g/kg. The three neem products greatly reduced progeny emergence, while P. glandulosus powder was less effective. NeemAzal protected the grains against S. zeamais damage better than the local neem products, which in turn provided far better grain protection against the weevil damage than P. glandulosus powder. NeemAzal was superior to the local neem products in grain protection against germination loss, with P. glandulosus being the least effective. NeemAzal and NSO had sufficient efficacy to be a component of an integrated management package for S. zeamais.
