Comparative approaches in social network ecology

Gregory F. Albery,
Shweta Bansal,
Matthew J. Silk

Abstract: Social systems vary enormously across the animal kingdom, with important implications for ecological and evolutionary processes such as infectious disease dynamics, anti‐predator defence, and the evolution of cooperation. Comparing social network structures between species offers a promising route to help disentangle the ecological and evolutionary processes that shape this diversity. Comparative analyses of networks like these are challenging and have been used relatively little in ecology, but are becoming i… Show more

“…A major challenge for comparative social network analysis is that networks have often been constructed based on different behaviours, data collection methods, sampling effort, and biological scales (Albery et al, 2024;Canteloup et al, 2020;Davis et al, 2018;Faust & Skvoretz, 2002). These differences can impact the extent to which a given observed network corresponds to the latent network of interest.…”

“…Many challenges are associated with comparing networks constructed using different sampling methodologies (Albery et al, 2024). The two we focus on here are differences in sampling protocol and differences in how the collected data are summarised into edge weights in the observed social network.…”
