This cross-over study was conducted to assess the germ-killing efficacy of an essential oil mouthrinse (EOM) by determining the blood levels of microorganisms associated with induced bacteremia and investigating the prevalence of this event in Brazilians with mild-to-moderate gingivitis. Thirty four (31.19%) subjects positive for bacteremia induced by chewing a ration of apple were enrolled out of 109 screened subjects (50 males and 59 females). A difference of at least 10 colony forming units between the pre-and post-insult blood samples was defined as a positive result. For the following two weeks patients underwent a toothbrush plus fluoride dentifrice normalization period, and were then scheduled for the Phase I protocol as follows. At baseline I, subjects were instructed to chew a new apple ration, had new blood samples taken before and after this oral stimulus, and were randomly assigned to an experimental essential oil (n = 17) or placebo (P) mouthrinse (n = 17) treatment for 2 weeks. These procedures were repeated at the end of Phase I and then followed by a two-week wash-out period (tooth brushing with fluoride dentifrice). Bacteremia was again induced at baseline and at the end of Phase II, when subjects were crossed-over to the other EOM or placebo groups. Bacterial count differences between baseline and 2-week post-treatment (EOM versus P) in the blood samples collected were assessed by analysis of covariance. Mean aerobic counts decreased by 45.8%, whereas mean anaerobic counts decreased by 63.3% after EOM treatment. After the P treatment, aerobic bacteria increased by 28.4% and anaerobic bacteria decreased by 18.5%. This study validated this novel methodology and showed that the germ-killing action of EOM significantly reduced bacteremia.

Biofouling is generally undesirable for many applications. An overview of the medical, marine and industrial fields susceptible to fouling is presented. Two types of fouling include biofouling from organism colonization and inorganic fouling from non-living particles. Nature offers many solutions to control fouling through various physical and chemical control mechanisms. Examples include low drag, low adhesion, wettability (water repellency and attraction), microtexture, grooming, sloughing, various miscellaneous behaviours and chemical secretions. A survey of nature's flora and fauna was taken in order to discover new antifouling methods that could be mimicked for engineering applications. Antifouling methods currently employed, ranging from coatings to cleaning techniques, are described. New antifouling methods will presumably incorporate a combination of physical and chemical controls.

RESUMENObjetivo: Determinar la eficacia de la clorhexidina sobre la cantidad de placa dental presente en sujetos adultos, usuarios de aparatología ortodoncica y residentes en el área metropolitana de Bucaramanga que eran atendidos en las clínicas de ortodoncia de la universidad Santo Tomas, durante el segundo semestre del año 2007. Materiales y métodos: Ensayo clínico controlado realizado con 60 sujetos adultos en tratamiento de ortodoncia. Se estableció el índice de placa OPI (Ortho-Plaque Index) y el índice gingival (GI Index). El grupo intervenido recibió 10 ml de Digluconato de Clorhexidina (0,2 %), que se utilizó en forma de enjuagues dos veces por día, sin interrupciones por quince días. Resultados: Los sujetos expuestos a la intervención tenían 2.2 veces más de probabilidad IC (1.6 a 3.3) de tener un índice OPI cuyos valores reflejaban una buena higiene oral. Conclusiones: Se podría afirmar que la exposición de los sujetos, con tratamiento de ortodoncia, al Digluconato de Clorhexidina (0.2%), por un periodo de quince días, disminuyó la placa dental significativamente. Materials and Methods: A controlled clinical essay was performed in 60 adults with orthodontic appliances. It was established the OPI plaque index (Ortho-Plaque index) and the gingival index (GI index). The experimental group received the basic maintenance therapy, chlorhexidine digluconate at 0.2% to be used as a 10 ml non dilute mouthwash, twice (2) a day for 15 days. Results: The patients exposed to the intervention had 2.2 times probability (1.6 versus 3.3) of their IC to get the OPI index whose values reflect a good oral hygiene. Conclusions:The patients with orthodontic appliances who used chlorhexidine digluconate (0.2%), for fifteen days long had a significant reduction of bacterian plaque.
