Comparative anticholinergic activity of oxaprotiline and amitriptyline

Abstract: Le Sher: Comparative anticholinergic activity of oxaprotiline and amitriptyline. Drug Dev.Res. 3561-566, 1983. As part of a double-blind multicenter trial comparing oxaprotiline with amitriptyline and placebo in 308 outpatients with moderate depression, objective (salivary flow) and subjective (dry mouth, blurred visionlvisual disorder, and constipation) determinants of anticholinergic activity were assessed. Both active treatments, but not placebo, induced approximately a 40% reduction in salivary flow aft… Show more

“…24,37 When compared with placebo, there were mixed findings for desipramine, with it causing more severe dry mouth than placebo in two studies but the same as placebo in another. 24,37,40 In terms of TeCAs, both mianserin and oxaprotiline caused less severe dry mouth than amitriptyline on objective measures in two studies, 39,41 although mianserin had similar effects to other TCAs in two others. 28,38 It caused less severe dry mouth than nortriptyline subjectively in a further study.…”
