Voltage regulator modules (VRM) need to have low output voltage ripple and tight efficiency to power advanced microprocessors. This paper explains a phase shedding technique to enhance efficiency and its impact on output voltage ripple. In this study, analysis was done on a 4-phase buck converter which is having an input voltage of 45-65 V and delivers an output of 9 V, 12A with a switching frequency of 200Khz. The phase shedding control scheme is suitable for applications such as power sources for programmable logic controllers, which is a part of SCADA systems, which requires a low voltage and high current power supply. Working of a multiphase buck converter with phase shedding is modelled and verified using Matlab/Simulink software. The simulation results show the effect of the phase shedding technique on efficiency in varying load conditions and the effect of an increase of the voltage ripple at the output.

<p>In this paper, simulation using MATLAB/SIMULINK is performed with<br />bipolar triangular fixed amplitude multi-carrier Phase Disposition (PD)<br />PWM strategy with sine wave, Third Harmonic Injection, 60 degree Pulse Width Modulation and stepped wave reference for the chosen impedance Source based H-Type flying capacitor Multilevel Inverter (ISBH-Type FCMLI). The root means square value of the fundamental component and Total Harmonic Distortion of the output voltage which are the most important performance indices for the chosen inverter topologies are evaluated presented and compared for various references through duty ratios. From the simulation results it is observed that for various references the THD is almost similar but the root mean square value in terms of voltage is more for THI, 60 degree PWM and stepped wave reference with phase disposition strategy. The results are obtained for ma (amplitude modulation index) < 1 (under amplitude modulation index), ma=1 (normal amplitude modulation index) and ma > 1 (over amplitude modulation index).</p>

This paper proposes a control scheme for seven level asymmetrical cascaded H-bridge multi level inverter (ACHBMLI) based on fractional order calculus. The seven level ACHBMLI consists of two H-bridges that are connected in series and are excited by different dc voltage sources. A simplified model is developed by assuming the small signal variation component is equal in both the H-bridges. A fractional order PID (FO-PID) controller is designed for the ACHBMLI using the simplified model. Simulation study shows the adequacy of FO-PID controller in giving an output voltage with minimum distortions. A conventional PID controller is also designed for ACHBMLI using the same simplified model. The performance of the ACHBMLI with FO-PID controller is compared with the performance of ACHBMLI with conventional PID controller. The simulation results prove the superiority of FO-PID controller in maintaining the output voltage of the ACHBMLI close to the reference voltage and in reducing the harmonic distortion of output voltage of the inverter. The simulation was done using MATLAB and the parameters of FO-PID controller was designed using FOMCON tool box.
