Comparative analysis of the regional efficiency in Serbia: DEA approach

Abstract: The main aim of the paper is to offer a statistical identification of differences in efficiency between Serbian regions. The regional resources covered by the analysis are presented in the form of infrastructure, investment in new fixed assets and employment levels. For the researching purpose, data envelopment method (DEA) is used as a major component in identifying regions that use their resources effectively. This approach of mathematical programming optimization tends to evaluate the efficiency of the anal… Show more

“…In contemporary literature, DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) models are increasingly used in the world when analyzing the efficiency of companies from all countries and economic sectors (Amin, & Hajjami, 2021;Chen et al, 2018Chen et al, , 2020Chen et al, , 2021aCooper et al, 1999;Rasoulzadeh et al, 2021;Stević et al, 2022). This is the case, for example, with the analysis of the efficiency of companies in Serbia (Đurić et al, 2020;Mandić et al, 2017;Martić, & Savić, 2001;Radonjić, 2020). They give a realistic picture of which domestic or foreign companies are efficient and which are not and what measures should be taken to increase efficiency (Alam et al, 2022;Amirteimoori et al, 2022;Andersen, & Petersen, 1993;Banker et al, 1984;Fotova Čiković & Lozić, 2022;Moghaddas et al, 2022;Park, & Kim, 2022;Sala-Garrido, 2023).…”

“…Firsova and Chernyshova (2018), Zemtsov and Kotsemir (2019) and Dzyubenko (2021) incorporated the DEA method to calculate the efficiency of regional innovation systems in Russia. Other DEA‐based studies analysing regional efficiency can be seen in various areas of application, such as agriculture (Toma et al, 2015), healthcare (Stefko et al, 2018), water management (Deng et al, 2016), research and development (R&D) (Aristovnik, 2014), as well as in many countries such as Croatia (Škare & Rabar, 2016), Spain (Solana‐Ibáñez et al, 2016), Greece (Karakitsiou et al, 2020), Serbia (Radonjić, 2020), Poland (Miszczyńska & Miszczyński, 2021). However, although the DEA method shows a high potential in research conducted in the area of materials management at the national level (Masternak‐Janus, 2019), currently no case studies demonstrate its use at the regional level.…”
