Comparative analysis of the plastid conversion, photochemical activity and chlorophyll degradation in developing embryos of green-seeded and yellow-seeded pea (Pisum sativum) cultivars

Abstract: Developing seeds of some higher plants are photosynthetically active and contain chlorophylls (Chl), which are typically destroyed at the late stages of seed maturation. However, in some crop plant cultivars, degradation of embryonic Chl remains incomplete, and mature seeds preserve green colour, as it is known for green-seeded cultivars of pea (Pisum sativum L.). The residual Chl compromise seed quality and represent a severe challenge for farmers. Hence, comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanism… Show more

“…Interestingly, these genes are tightly co-expressed during all steps of plant ontogenesis [101]. ABI3 and ABI5 are involved in the regulation of chlorophyll catabolism, raffinose family oligosaccharides synthesis, and LEA genes expression at the late maturation stage [16,92,[102][103][104][105]. ABI5 can also act as a signaling integrator of ABA and other hormones [103,106,107].…”

“…Chlorophyll fluorescence-based technology is centered on the capacity of chlorophyll, which is often present in seeds during their development to emit light in a slightly longer wavelength in relation to the light that was absorbed (Misra et al, 2012;Smolikova et al, 2017). Because chlorophyll degradation is usually observed at late steps of seed maturation (Smolikova et al, 2020), chlorophyll content and its fluorescence are inversely proportional to the seed maturity and, consequently, to its quality (Ooms and Destain, 2011).…”

“…Of late, few common factors are ought to be involved in regulation of initiation and termination of dormancy along with enhancing seed maturation and desiccation processes, that include DOG1 proteins and ABA (Chahtane et al, 2017 ; Nonogaki, 2019 ; Smolikova et al, 2020 ). Hence, understanding of the activities and regulatory control of these key factors would facilitate better understanding of seed longevity.…”
