Atlantoraja platana is an oviparous skate endemic to the south‐west Atlantic Ocean, and is one of the skate species most exploited by local industrial bottom trawl fisheries. Oviparous elasmobranchs encapsulate their eggs in complex egg cases produced by the oviductal gland (OG). This organ is exclusively present in these fishes and comprises four distinct zones: club, baffle, papillary and terminal. The relative size and structural complexity of these zones correlate with mode of reproduction. Glycans are known to play major roles in reproduction so their distribution in each zone of the OG could explain the functional multiplicity of the gland in skates, but this topic has not been previously investigated. In this study, morphological, histochemical and lectin‐histochemical analysis revealed various novel aspects of A. platana's OG. The club, papillary and terminal zones positively stained for periodic acid Schiff's reagent (PAS) and Alcian Blue (AB), indicating the presence of neutral and acid mucopolysaccharides. However, the buffle zone was negative for PAS and AB stains, but was positive for all the lectins used. Each zone of the OG had a characteristic pattern of glycan expression. Finally, we confirmed the presence of sperm but not sperm storage. This is the first lectin‐histochemical study of the OG in chondrichtyan fish and it has proven to be an important tool to understand some of the mechanisms of fertility and reproductive success in economic important species such as A. platana.

The plains viscacha is a hystricognathi rodent with special reproductive characteristics. Despite poly‐ovulation of 800 oocytes, it generates a high embryonic mortality since from 10 to 12 implantations only one or two offspring are born. The present work analyses the morphological, morphometrical, histochemical and lectinhistochemical characteristics of the uterus and uterine cervix of pregnant and non‐pregnant viscacha. Anatomically, the uterus has two horns each one continued with a short cervix devoid of glands. The structure of the uterus is like that of other species; however, the proportion and size of its glands varies according to the physiological state. In viscacha, there is no uterine body and cervices cannot be differentiated externally. The formation of two sack bottoms is determined by the presence of a middle raphe in the cranial portion of the vagina. The so‐described anatomy is different from that described in other hystricognathi such as guinea pig and coypu. The cervix presents two microscopically differentiable regions: the endocervix and the ectocervix lined by epithelia with different characteristics. The general characteristics of the uterus of L. maximus do not show specific differences with those of other mammals that might explain its peculiar gestation.

The object of this study was to describe the prenatal development and histochemical properties of mucins in the sheep gastrointestinal tract. To determine changes in the mucin profile, the sections were stained with specific histochemical stains for carbohydrates. While neutral and mixed mucins were observed in the superficial epithelial cells of the abomasal pyloric region, acidic mucins were detected in the secretory ducts and corpus of the glands. Acidic mucins consisted predominantly of sialomucins. In the duodenal villi, the number of goblet cells containing neutral mucins increased toward the end of gestation, whereas Brunner's glands contained acidic mucins until the 95th day of gestation and both acidic and neutral mucins thereafter. The jejunal goblet cells contained either acidic, neutral, or mixed mucins. Goblet cells containing acidic mucins, which were mainly localized to the ileal crypts and villi, mostly contained sulfated mucins. While villi were observed in the proximal colon until the 115th day of gestation, later the typical crypt structure emerged. During the period in which the villi were found in the proximal colon, the goblet cells containing sulphomucins were predominant, whereas the goblet cells containing sialomucins were predominant after the typical crypt structure was formed. In conclusion, gastrointestinal mucins may be involved in the formation of meconium during the prenatal period, and acidic mucins may contribute to the strength of the intestinal barrier against pathogens and digestive enzymes, as the barrier is not fully functional after birth.
