Comparative analysis of some parameters affecting maize streak virus (MSV) transmission of various Cicadulina spp. populations

Abstract: Three populations of C. mbila originating from the rain forest (Ibadan), southern part of sudan savanna (Kadawa, Kano) and the Jos Plateau, and C. triangula population from Ibadan (Moor Plantation) were compared in relation to their ability to acquire and transmit maize streak virus (MSV). Acquisition and transmission efficiency increased with time of access feeding. Joint regression analysis showed that the populations did not differ significantly from each other in transmission efficiency of the virus. Nymph… Show more

“…Among which are: Cicadulina mbila Naude ´ , C. arachidis China, C. bipunctella China, C. triangula Ruppel, C. similis China, C. latens Fennah,C. niger Ghauri and C. parazeae Ghauri [32,43,44,23]. The virus does not multiply in the vector and it is not transmitted congenitally to the progeny of the vector.…”

“…The affected maize plant is shorter and has less vigour because of early infection as observed by Okoth et al (1987). Irrespective of the number of C. triangular used in the transmission of MSV, all the varieties were infected and the severity of MSV increased with time.…”

“…Maize streak virus symptoms ranged from small and spherical chlorotic spots 0.5-2.0 mm diameter in young leaves to continuous longitudinal chlorotic streaks, mainly along the veins of the leaf laminae (Okoth et al 1987, Bosque-Pe´rez et al 1998. In severe infection, chlorotic stripes may merge into pale green or yellow or even white appearance on the leaf surface of the plant (Bosque-Pe´rez et al 1998).…”

“…There are 22 species of Cicadulina , 18 of which occur in Africa (Webb, 1987). Of these, nine have been reported to be vectors of MSV: Cicadulina arachidis China, Cicadulina bipunctata (= bipunctella ) (Melichar), Cicadulina ghaurii Dabrowski, Cicadulina latens Fennah, Cicadulina mbila (Naude), Cicadulina niger China, Cicadulina parazeae Ghauri, Cicadulina similis China, and Cicadulina storeyi ( = triangula ) China (Storey, 1925, 1 936; Fennah, 1959; Rose, 1962; Dabrowski, 1985, 1987; Okoth & Dabrowski, 1987; Webb, 1987; Okoth et al., 1988; Reynaud, 1988; Efron et al., 1989; Thottappilly et al., 1993; Birgirwa et al., 1995). The minimum latent period in C. mbila is 6–12 h (Storey, 1925, 1928).…”
