Comparative analysis of regional water quality in Canada using the Water Quality Index

Abstract: The Canadian Council of Ministers for the Environment (CCME) has developed a Water Quality Index (WQI) to simplify the reporting of complex water quality data. This science-based communication tool tests multi-variable water data against numeric water quality guidelines and/or objectives to produce a single unit-less number that represents overall water quality. The CCME WQI has been used to rate overall water quality in spatial and temporal comparisons of site(s). However, it has not been used in a comparativ… Show more

“…Therefore, representative and reliable monitoring and assessment of water quality are critical (Massoud, 2010;Martin and Madelene, 2016). Surface water quality is traditionally assessed by water quality standards and objectives (Rosemond et al, 2009). However, this traditional approach cannot provide sufficient information on the overall quality of water or the spatial and temporal trends (Kannel et al, 2007).…”

“…Each parameter contributes towards its respective PC and its contribution is determined by the loading values. PCA has been used in many water quality studies, such as 1) determining spatio-temporal changes in the water quality of Jajrood River [8]; 2) comparing water quality of regional sites of Canada for spatial and temporal changes [9]; 3) seasonal and spatial variations for surface water quality of Mid-Black Sea Coast in Turkey [10]; and 4) impact of agricultural activities for Nathan Creek Watershed, British Columbia, Canada [11].…”

“…Several studies in the literature have applied this index for various purposes. In Canada, it was used to evaluate the water quality status of several river basins (Khan et al 2003;Lumb et al 2006;Davies 2006), to evaluate drinking water quality (Khan et al 2004;Hurley et al 2012) and to assess water quality in metal mines (de Rosemond et al 2009). In addition to the above-mentioned applications of CCME WQI in Canada, this index also has been adopted in several other countries.…”
