Comparative Analysis of Project Performance Between Different Project Delivery Systems

Abstract: Project Delivery System (PDS) defines the relationship and timing of involvement between different contracting parties. The main PDSs referred to in cited literature are: Design-Bid-Build (DBB), Construction Management at Risk (CMR), Design-Build (DB), and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). By applying statistical tests such as Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) F-test and Kruskal-Wallis H-test to a dataset of 109 projects, this paper compares the performance of the four PDSs. As a result, statistically significant … Show more

“…There is a significant body of work in project performance analysis which contains a variety of different scoring systems and performance metrics to compare projects. The general chronology of project delivery systems both over time (in terms of adoption) and effectiveness (in terms of project performance) proceeds from Design-Bid-Build (DBB) to CMR, then to Design-Build (DB) 5 and culminates with IPD (Ibrahim & Hanna, 2019).…”

“…Construction industry contributes significantly to the economic growth of a country (Santoso and Gallage, 2020), despite its fragmented and unstable nature; it is also the second biggest driver of the Indian economy (Tripathi et al, 2021). This industry is facing challenges due to several performance shortfalls with majority of its problems arising due to poor workmanship, unavailability of proper materials and machinery, poor productivity and work order changes occurring during the execution of the project (Dzieko nski et al, 2018;Ibrahim and Hanna, 2019). Therefore, the chances of underperformance in construction projects are quite high in several construction organizations (Gudien_ e et al, 2013;Okudan et al, 2022).…”

“…However, IPD is becoming increasingly popular and more organizations are expressing interest in its apparent benefits to the OAEC industry (El Asmar et al 2013). Ibrahim and Hanna (2019) used an analysis of key performance indicators on 109 different projects to show that more collaborative delivery methods such as IPD showed statistically significant improvements in key areas of assessment.…”
