Comparative analysis of milt quality and steroid levels in blood and seminal fluid of Persian sturgeon males, Acipenser persicus during final maturation induced by hormonal treatment

Abstract: Steroids both in seminal fluid (SF) and blood serum (BS) as well as the milt quality (sperm motility and sperm production) were investigated during final maturation of Persian sturgeon. The BS levels of testosterone (T), 11-Ketotestosterone (11-KT), progesterone (P), 17α,20β,21-trihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (20βS), cortisol (C) and 17α,hydroxyprogesterone (OHP) elevated after pituitary preparation (PP) treatment and then decreased during stripping period for spermiating males. Such elevations did not occur for no… Show more

“…Levels of basal cortisol in serum, in this study were similar to other previous studies on sturgeons, such as in Scaphirhynchus albus , Acipenser medirostris , Acipenser oxyrinchus , Polyodon spathula and H. huso (Barton, Rahn, Feist, Bollig & Schreck ; Barton, Bollig, Hauskins & Jansen ; Lankford, Adams & Cech ; Baker, Wood, Litvak & Kieffer ; Webb, Allert, Kappenman, Marcos, Feist, Schreck & Shackleton ; Hoseini, Hosseini & Nodeh ; Yousefi, Abtahi & Kenari ). However, basal levels in this study were considerably lower than those of previous studies on the same species (Kamangar, Rasaee, Amiri, Abtahi & Bahmani ; 35 ng mL −1 ; Hajirezaee, Rafiee & Hushangi ; 100 ng mL −1 ; Falahatkar, Akhavan et al . ; 10 ng mL −1 ; Falahatkar, Poursaeid, Efatpanah, Meknatkhah & Biswas ; 18–45 ng mL −1 ).…”

“…In this study, the elevation of the 11-KT levels was related to good-quality semen in pacu. A positive correlation between 11-KT and sperm motility characteristics (percentage and duration of motility) was also found in Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) during the final testicular maturation induced by hormonal treatment (Hajirezaee et al, 2011). In addition, with respect to changes in the plasma levels of T during hormonal induction, differences were only found in the RS1 and End groups and were therefore not related to semen quality.…”

“…The seminal fluid contains special composition including ions, lipids, carbohydrates and proteins which support the viability of spermatozoa after spermiation (Hajirezaee et al 2011). Sex steroids are organic components, which have key role in hormonal control of the reproduction in fish (Kime 1993;Barannikova et al 2002;Viayeh et al 2006).…”
