Comparative analysis of fixed and sun tracking low power PV systems considering energy consumption

Abstract. The paper presents a physical construction of a measurement stand consisting of a photovoltaic module operating in a fixed optimal configuration and in a solar tracking with a modified astronomical positioning. In order to reduce the electric energy consumption by two direct current linear motors system is positioned three times a day during winter months. Prepared energy balance, using annual measurements, confirmed the legitimacy of using twoaxis Sun tracking units for central Poland. Basing on the daily and monthly electricity production and solar irradiance for both photovoltaic units a mathematical formula with proposed correction factors is presented to calculate with good accuracy monthly electric energy generation for a fixed photovoltaic installation. The results of calculations were compared with measurements showing good correlation.

This study aims to design and develop the prototype models of the smart photovoltaic system blind (SPSB). To achieve this objective, the study defined the properties in three ways: (i) the photovoltaic (PV) panel; (ii) the tracking system; and (iii) the monitoring system. First, the amorphous silicon PV panel was determined as a PV panel, and the width and length of the PV panel were determined to be 50 mm and 250 mm, respectively. Second, the four tracker types (i.e., fixed type, vertical single-axis tracker, horizontal single-axis tracker, and azimuth-altitude dual-axis tracker) was applied, as well as the direct tracking method based on the amount of electricity generated as a tracking system. Third, the electricity generation and environmental conditions were chosen as factors to be monitored in order to evaluate and manage the technical performance of SPSB as a monitoring system. The prototype model of the SPSB is designed and developed for providing the electricity generated from its PV panel, as well as for reducing the indoor cooling demands through the blind's function, itself (i.e., blocking out sunlight).

In this study, efficiency analysis of the solar tracking photovoltaic (PV) system in Eskişehir region is considered for onsite real solar power generation values. It is shown that the tracking system's power generations are always higher than fixed one, but increased yield ratio is changing according to weather conditions (sunny or cloudy times). In order to make a fair analysis/comparison, all the instantaneous real solar power generations between 1 July and 30 October 2016 are used to figure out the ratio of sunny and cloudy days of the whole year. The averaged total generation values are calculated and it is revealed that the tracking system provides approximately 33 % higher electricity generation than the same capacity fixed PV panels for Eskişehir region.
