Comparative analysis of dental enamel polyvinylsiloxane impression and polyurethane casting methods for SEM research

Abstract: Dental casting is a very common procedure for making high-quality replicas of paleo-anthropological remains. Replicas are frequently used, instead of original remains, to study both fossil and extant Primate teeth in morphological and metrical analyses. Several commercial products can be used in molds. This study analyzed SEM image resolution and enamel surface feature definition of tooth molds at various magnification levels and obtained, with both Coltène and 3M low-viscosity body polyvinylsiloxane impressio… Show more

“…This study was based on an epoxy resin replica technique 45 that provided the advantage of evaluating the effects of bleaching agents on enamel surface morphology under normal intraoral conditions, 22 while permitting morphological evaluation of the same area of the tooth before and after bleaching. 22 The method sensitivity was assessed by the positive control: the profilometer was able to detect the roughness increase of the etched enamel, confirming the typical etching pattern exhibited with SEM analysis.…”

“…All specimens are free from pathology and skeletally adult. Polyvinylsiloxane molds (President Jet Regular, Coltene-Whaledent) of the proximal tibia of specimens that are part of the HamannTodd Collection were prepared (Galbany et al, 2006), and molds were scanned using a NextEngine laser scanner. Tibiae that are part of the Ta€ ı chimpanzee skeletal collection were scanned using a Breuckmann optoTop-HE white light surface scanner.…”
