Comparative analysis of combined phosphorus and drought stress-responses in two winter wheat

Abstract: Phosphorus stress and drought stress are common abiotic stresses. In this study, two winter wheat “Xindong20” and “Xindong23” were solution cultured and then treated with drought stress under conventional phosphorus level (CP: 1.0 mmol/L) and low phosphorus level (LP: 0.05 mmol /L), respectively. The results showed that with the increase of drought stress, the LP application was more conducive to the growth of root tips, length, forks, surfarea and root vitality of wheat. Under the LP treatment, the total phos… Show more

“…It probably suggested that the root starch begin to degrade and the root tissue is already in a state of dehydration, which was more serious under LP than CP treatment. This speculation were in agreement with the performance of DNA fragmentation and root water content [42].…”

“…According to the results of gene chip in our laboratory, compared with CP, the gene of β-amylase involved in starch degradation was signi cantly up-regulated. While, the genes of coding starch branching enzyme III and glycogen (starch) synthase related to starch synthesas were signi cantly down-regulated at D7 in LP treatment [42]. Based on this, we speculated that the degradation rate of starch was stimulated and the synthesis rate of starch decreased under LP treatment.…”

“…This may be due to that with the growth of lateral roots, the responses of cell wall synthesis and growth-related genes to P accelerate. For example, the gene chip detection in our previous study found that the expression of the gene encoding cell wall invertase in wheat root treated with LP and 7 days of drought stress increased significantly [ 43 ].…”
