Comparative Analysis of Alternative Splicing in Two Contrasting Apple Cultivars Defense against Alternaria alternata Apple Pathotype Infection

Abstract: Alternaria blotch disease, caused by the Alternaria alternata apple pathotype (A. alternata AP), is one of the most serious fungal diseases in apples. Alternative splicing (AS), one of the pivotal post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms, plays essential roles in various disease resistance responses. Here, we performed RNA-Seq for two apple cultivars (resistant cultivar ‘Jonathan’ (J) and susceptible cultivar ‘Starking Delicious’ (SD)) infected by A. alternata AP to further investigate their AS divergence. I… Show more

“…This suggests that biotic stress significantly impacts the AS profiles, augmenting the plasticity of plants to adapt to stressful environments. There are reports showing that a greater number of DAS genes play an important role in resistance response, as in apple defense against Alternaria alternata (Zhou et al, 2022), Arabidopsis defense against Ralstonia solanacearum (Qin et al, 2020), and Pseudomonas syringae (Howard et al, 2013). In line with the previous reports, MYMIV also induces a robust AS‐perturbation in the resistant background.…”

“…Duncan's multiple range test was used to determine differences between treatments at a 5% level of significance. VENNY 2.1.0 ( http://bioinfogp.cnb.csic.es/tools/venny/index.html ) and SRplot (Science and Research Online Plot) ( https://bioinformatics.com.cn ) were used to statistically analyze the GC–MS data and for creating Venn diagrams and heat maps (Esmail et al, 2022 ; Zhou et al, 2022 ).…”

“…Black spot is a major postharvest infectious disease of apples caused by Alternaria alternata 4 . This condition leads to fruit decay, characterised by a dense covering of black or dark green mould on the affected area, often accompanied by white floccules adhering to the mould layer 5 . These manifestations can severely affect the market value of the fruit, which can result in economic losses of over 50% 6 .…”
