Comparative analysis of abdominal fluid cytokine levels in ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)

Abstract: Background: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a rare, yet severe, iatrogenic complication of ovulation induction therapy during assisted reproductive procedures. Our group previously detected atypical cells in the ascitic fluid of OHSS patients, although no malignancy developed during follow up. Here, the aim was to perform a comparative analysis of the cytokines present in the abdominal fluid of patients affected by OHSS versus patients with advanced ovarian cancer, a benign adnexal mass, or ovarian… Show more

“…These facts proved that we had been confused by the results of the ascites cytology and serum tumor markers. The presence of tumor cells in the ascitic fluid is usually suggestive of malignancy; however, previous literatures have also reported the presence of atypical cells in the ascitic fluid of women with severe OHSS [ 8 , 15 ]. In the present case, we observed suspected adenocarcinoma cells twice, although the possibility of malignancy was ruled out.…”

“…The authors stressed that because of the high level of IL-8 in ascites, inflammation played an important role in the course of ovarian cancer [ 28 ]. Farkas et al [ 64 ] carried out a comparative analysis of IL-8 concentrations in blood serum and ascites in 16 patients with ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, 16 patients with serous ovarian cancer in Stages IIIB or IIIC and 17 patients with endometriosis. Control group comprised 21 patients with benign ovary conditions from whom blood samples were collected, and intraoperative pelvic washing was performed during laparoscopic cystectomy.…”

“…The study groups differed in the number and mean age of patients, which clearly affected the inflammation profile. However, a trend toward production of cytokines in ascites was found, suggesting the same pathomechanism of developing ascites in both ovarian cancer and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome or other benign ovary conditions [ 64 ]. A study to determine IL-8 concentrations in ascites, blood serum and tumor tissue from 35 patients aged 41 to 78 years with ovarian cancer at the FIGO III and IV Stages was conducted [ 29 ].…”
