Selecting the appropriate project delivery method (PDM) is a very significant managerial decision that impacts the success of construction projects. This paper provides a critical review of related literature on the evolution of project delivery methods, selection methods and selection criteria over the years and their suitability in the construction industry of today’s world. The literature review analysis has concluded that project delivery methods evolve at a slower rate compared to the evolution of the construction industry. The paper also suggests features of an evolved project delivery method that is digitally integrated, people-centered, and sustainability-focused. Moreover, the paper highlights the latest selection criteria such as risk, health and wellbeing, sustainability goals and technological innovations. Furthermore, the paper concluded that advanced artificial intelligence techniques are yet to be exploited to develop a smart decision support model that will assist clients in selecting the most appropriate delivery method for successful project completion. Additionally, the paper presents a framework that illustrates the relationship between the different PDM variables needed to harmonize with the construction industry. Last, but not least, the paper fills a gap in the literature as it covers a different perspective in the field of project delivery methods. The paper also provides recommendations and future research ideas.

As a way of improving project performance, collaborative project delivery methods (PDMs) have been presented as a potential solution. Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) is a relational PDM that has gained a lot of attention in recent years. However, laws, regulations and internal restrictions are factors that limit a project's influence on its PDM, and implementing IPD is not always possible. In this study, we address three large road construction projects with different approaches to a collaborative PDM. In the paper, we ask "How can projects use alternative organization and contract arrangements to achieve incentives which resemble the IPD arrangement?" The study was carried out by conducting a literature study and a case study approach. Three projects were investigated via document reviews and semi-structured interviews with key actors in the value chains. We conclude that there are several possible ways to arrange a relational PDM to facilitate efficient project execution. The level of collaboration, the timing of contractor involvement and the structure of the contract and procurement procedure are examples of adjustable factors in early stages that affect project execution.

The construction industry is often ranked top in producing the largest amount of waste during a project, be it the waste of material resources or the waste of manpower. This has elevated the need for an improved and more structured management technique. This study will look into the principles and practices of lean management pertinent to highway construction projects to analyze whether lean management practices can improve the management efficiency for complex projects. This study adopted a quantitative approach, and a linear regression model has been used to investigate correlations between the lean test factors and the efficiency-dependent variables. It was found that lean management tools that are used repeatedly and the ones that require a high level of detailing are positively associated with efficiency improvement in highway construction projects. In particular, LPS, JIT, and VM were found to be more commonly used in highway construction projects. The research results will aid in the initial decision-making process of the project managers, as they will be able to map different lean tools with their benefits and limitations and then select the one that best suits the project needs and deliverables. Future studies can adopt the interpretivism paradigm to explore new theories and concepts related to highway construction management.
