Purpose Within the field of life cycle assessment (LCA), simplifications are a response to the practical restrictions in the context of a study. In the 1990s, simplifications were part of a debate on streamlining within LCA. Since then, many studies have been published on simplifying LCA but with little attention to systematise the approaches available. Also, despite being pervasive during the making of LCA studies, simplifications remain often invisible in the final results. This paper therefore reviews the literature on simplification in LCA in order to systematise the approaches found today. Methods A review of the LCA simplification literature was conducted. The systematic search and selection process led to a sample of 166 publications. During the review phase, the conceptual contributions to the simplification discourse were evaluated. A dataset of 163 entries was created, listing the conceptual contributions to the simplification debate. An empirically grounded analysis led to the generative development of a systematisation of simplifications according to their underlying simplifying logic. Results and discussion Five simplifying logics were identified: exclusion, inventory data substitution, qualitative expert judgment, standardisation and automation. Together, these simplifying logics inform 13 simplification strategies. The identified logics represent approaches to handle the complexities of product systems and expectations of the users of LCA results with the resources available to the analyst. Each simplification strategy is discussed with regard to its main applications and challenges. Conclusions This paper provides a first systematisation of the different simplification logics frequently applied in LCA since the original streamlining discussion. The presented terminology can help making communication about simplification more explicit and transparent, thus important for the credibility of LCA. Despite the pervasiveness of simplification in LCA, there is a relative lack of research on simplification per se, making further research describing simplification as a practice and analysing simplifications methodologically desirable.

For some years now the regulations in the sustainability field oriented the practitioners towards an increasing restraint concerning energy necessities, to reconsider the weight in terms of energy and environmental impacts associated with different phases of their life cycle. Among the reliable models to carry out the valuation, the Life Cycle Assessment remains a useful tool that determine the most impactful stages of the life cycle of any process and, thus, its environmental performances. This paper aims to develop and complete previous analyses on sustainability led on the historical heritage of the city of Matera, highlighting all the issues that are still unresolved and the possible solutions to be undertaken. Deep considerations on sustainability and its peculiarities are carried out. A reported analysis of literature and a description of the methods and tools used in the case study are shown. The case study consists in performing the LCA using SimaPro software, based on the assumptions aimed to the energetic retrofit for "Palazzo del Sedile", an historical building located in Matera, Italy. In this section, three methods of assessment are largely described, the choice has been made due to their significance in expressing the environmental effects from three very different perspectives.

ResumoA sustentabilidade está sendo cada vez mais vista como uma possível solução para os problemas decorrentes, principalmente, da ação humana no meio ambiente. Entretanto, para que seus efeitos sejam observados à longo prazo faz-se necessário que sejam utilizadas abordagens como a Pesquisa Operacional (PO) que busca solucionar, ou pelo menos minimizar, problemas reais e complexos, fornecendo apoio aos tomadores de decisão. Nesse sentido, este estudo busca realizar uma revisão da literatura com abordagem bibliométrica que tem como objetivo identificar estudos que utilizam a PO aplicada à sustentabilidade. Para obter e compilar as informações, foram utilizados os bancos de dados do Web of Science™, que apresenta alcance e cobertura satisfatórios. Os resultados mostram, por exemplo, que o assunto, embora antigo, continua em expansão, sendo publicados estudos em periódicos com elevada relevância científica. Além disso, nota-se que a utilização da PO é uma importante estratégia de suporte aos tomadores de decisão brasileiros de diversas áreas do conhecimento tais como saúde pública, gerenciamento urbano e rural e engenharia para promoção da sustentabilidade. AbstractSustainability is increasingly being seen as a possible solution to problems arising mainly from human action on the environment. However, for its long-term effects to be observed, it is necessary to use approaches such as Operational Research (OR) which seeks to solve, or at least minimize, real and complex problems, providing support to decision makers. Thus, this study conducts a literature review with a bibliometric approach that aims to identify studies that use the OR applied to sustainability. To obtain and compile the data, we used Web of Science ™ databases, which have satisfactory range and coverage. The results show, for example, that the despite being an old subject, it is still expanding, with studies published in journals with high scientific relevance. In addition, it is noted that the use of OR is an important strategy to support Brazilian decision makers from various areas of knowledge such as public health, urban and rural management, and engineering to promote sustainability.
