Comparative accuracy of a shoulder range motion measurement sensor and Vicon 3D motion capture for shoulder abduction in frozen shoulder

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Although patients with frozen shoulders have the range of motion (ROM) of their shoulder’s abduction movements measured at hospital and the physical therapy visits, multiple visits to check for progress is often difficult. Thus, we developed an artificial intelligence-based image recognition detectable sensor (AIRDS) intended for easy use at home. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of a sensor (AIRDS) measuring shoulder abduction angle, thus offering a valid and feas… Show more

“…Previous methods for automated assessment of shoulder function in humans relied on expensive marker-or sensor-based techniques [13][14][15][16][17][18] . Instead, we capitalize on recent advances in machine learning to implement lowcost markerless motion capture of string pulling behavior videos 19 .…”

“…24 Although it is not possible to define a univocal protocol to date, rehabilitation treatments play a pivotal role in the management of FS, and comprise patient education, stretching exercises, joint mobilization, and manual therapy. 4,[25][26][27] Physical modalities such as low-level laser therapy (LLLT), magnetotherapy, ultrasound (US) therapy, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) are also commonly used. [28][29][30] Manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) is another possible procedure which involves scapular stabilization with subsequent flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal and external rotation of the shoulder until reaching the final degrees of movement following anesthesia.…”
