Comparative Accuracy Analysis of a Real-time and an Intermittent-Scanning Continuous Glucose Monitoring System

Abstract: Background: Currently, two different types of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems are available: real time (rt) CGM systems that continuously provide glucose values and intermittent-scanning (is) CGM systems. This study compared accuracy of an rtCGM and an isCGM system when worn in parallel. Methods: Dexcom G5 Mobile (DG5) and FreeStyle Libre (FL) were worn in parallel by 27 subjects for 14 days including two clinic sessions with induced glucose excursions. The percentage of CGM values within ±20% or ±… Show more

“…It was previously shown that the FreeStyle Libre deviates systematically by -0.5 mmol/L in people with type 1 diabetes using HemoCue capillary measurements as a reference[ 15 ]. The Dexcom G5 was found to have a MARD of 7.1%-15.7% when tested in people with type 1 diabetes and using a Yellow Spring Instrument as a reference[ 16 ].…”

“…This feature allowed caretakers to remotely monitor glucose levels and offer treatment support. The same year, the G5 sensor was released, which incorporated wireless rapid data downloads on a smart phone and/or receiver 61 . The G6 was approved in 2018 as the first iCGM that allowed integration with different insulin pumps, such as Tandem and Omnipod 5 62 , 63 .…”
