Comparative abilities of Microsoft Kinect and Vicon 3D motion capture for gait analysis

Abstract: Biomechanical analysis is a powerful tool in the evaluation of movement dysfunction in orthopaedic and neurologic populations. Three-dimensional (3D) motion capture systems are widely used, accurate systems, but are costly and not available in many clinical settings. The Microsoft Kinect™ has the potential to be used as an alternative low-cost motion analysis tool. The purpose of this study was to assess concurrent validity of the Kinect™ with Brekel Kinect software in comparison to Vicon Nexus during sagittal… Show more

“…Firstly, the derivation of noisy joint angles delivered by the Kinect induces noisy derivatives. Previous work demonstrated a correlation of 0.8 between joint angles delivered by the Kinect and an optoelectronic system [21]. This could partly explain the low correlation between CRP computed with Kinect and Vicon data.…”

“…Jordan et al [13] salientam que esses dispositivos constituem importantes instrumentos para se obter medidas mais precisas dos movimentos. De fato, estudos usando sistemas automáticos de coleta de dados, com marcadores fixos ao corpo, estão se tornando mais comuns nos últimos anos [14,15]. Entretanto, devido ao alto custo desses sistemas e à complexidade da sua manipulação técnica, ainda existem poucos centros que os utilizam na demanda laboral.…”

“…In particular, in spinal cord injuries rehabilitation, the Kinect was compared with an expensive high precision optical system and was found to be an accurate low-cost and easy to use alternative [4]. The Kinect was found to be a valid tool for assessing spatiotemporal components of gait [5,6] but it is unable to accurately assess lower limb kinematics [7,8]. In order to bypass the lower extremities inaccuracy a technique that relies on knee joint relative angle has been proposed to detect foot-off and foot contact during the gait cycle [9].…”
