RESUMENEl presente artículo es una revisión de la espectroscopia infrarroja como una técnica alternativa para la caracterización microbiana, permitiendo la discriminación a nivel de género, especie y aún entre cepas y serotipos. La espectroscopia infrarroja se basa en la absorción de los rayos infrarrojos de luz por varias moléculas en una muestra. Esta permite analizar todas las longitudes de onda del espectro infrarrojo simultáneamente, siendo las que pertenecen a la región media la de mayor utilidad práctica, cuya extensión se encuentra entre un rango de 4000 y 650 cm -1 , ofreciendo un método rápido y confiable para el análisis de compuestos orgánicos, células y tejidos entre otras. La capacidad de expresar una huella dactilar específica permite que la espectroscopia infrarroja pueda ser utilizada para la identificación de cepas microbianas desconocidas en las bibliotecas de datos espectrales. Es así, como en años recientes han sido publicadas diversas investigaciones orientadas a la identificación de microorganismos tales como bacterias, parásitos y levaduras entre otros. Por tal, este trabajo de revisión de literatura médica tiene por objeto describir aspectos relacionados con los antecedentes históricos, el impacto y aplicabilidad de ésta técnica en las ciencias biomédicas mediante la búsqueda, recopilación y revisión de artículos de publicación reciente en diversas bases de datos de carácter científico y médico.

The current understanding of deviations of human microbiota caused by antibiotic treatment is poor. In an attempt to improve it, a proof-of-principle spectroscopic study of the breath of one volunteer affected by a course of antibiotics for Helicobacter pylori eradication was performed. Fourier transform spectroscopy enabled searching for the absorption spectral structures sensitive to the treatment in the entire mid-infrared region. Two spectral ranges were found where the corresponding structures strongly correlated with the beginning and end of the treatment. The structures were identified as methyl ester of butyric acid and ethyl ester of pyruvic acid. Both acids generated by bacteria in the gut are involved in fundamental processes of human metabolism. Being confirmed by other studies, measurement of the methyl butyrate deviation could be a promising way for monitoring acute gastritis and anti-Helicobacter pylori antibiotic treatment.

In people without a history of gastrectomy and those who have not recently had antibiotics or proton ,pump inhibitors, urea breath tests had high diagnostic accuracy while serology and stool antigen tests were less accurate for diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection.This is based on an indirect test comparison (with potential for bias due to confounding), as evidence from direct comparisons was limited or unavailable. The thresholds used for these tests were highly variable and we were unable to identify specific thresholds that might be useful in clinical practice.We need further comparative studies of high methodological quality to obtain more reliable evidence of relative accuracy between the tests. Such studies should be conducted prospectively in a representative spectrum of participants and clearly reported to ensure low risk of bias. Most importantly, studies should prespecify and clearly report thresholds used, and should avoid inappropriate exclusions.
